So many terms are thrown around relating to vans you can travel / live in. Road-life, van-life, #vanlife, adventure van, RV, campervan, van conversion, class B, etc…. What’s the big deal with all the names and the confusion?
Well, let’s clear this up. There are just 2 classes of vans as we see it.
This is the most common type, often referred to as a campervan, adventure van or class B RV. The one thing they all have in common is limited power and living systems that keep you tethered to the grid and/or short-term travel. Best suited for three-season campgrounds, RV parks and the occasional short-term off-grid boondocking not too far from civilization. Some look like 5-star hotels, and some are glorified metal tents with a variety of finishings and quality. This wide-ranging class is typically designed for various forms of camping and is not meant for longer-term untethered four-season travels or living.
Best suited to the weekend warrior camper or RV park dweller looking to set up shop with power and water hookups.
Designed for short and long-term adventures with extended off-grid power and living systems. It must be fully self-contained, self-propelled, parking lot friendly and can be overnighted in anywhere without the need for booking camp or RV sites. Power and water hookups are not needed. This class also requires the living space to have all the amenities, comfort and capability to travel for extended periods of time or full-time if desired.
This class comprises a mix of DIY and professionally built conversions with various seasonal capabilities, living systems, and quality. Being comfortably untethered and self-contained for short and long periods to far-flung destinations is well within this class’s reach.
However, this class has a clear distinction within it that very few van-life conversations can manage: winter! That’s right, true four-season travel. Freezing temps are the Achilles heel of almost all van conversions, save for a rare few that have the necessary design characteristics and systems to keep you safe and warm in the harshest weather. And for you winter nay-sayers, a four-season van will also keep you cooler and more comfortable in the summer sweltering heat!
We believe the best van conversions will have all the necessary living and environmental systems to sustain four-season long-term off-grid travel.
